Wendell's Korean Chicken

Wendell made this Korean Chicken back in September (!!!), and I thought that these photos were doomed for the Trash Bin because I lost the recipe. But I discovered a pile of recipes that Wendell had printed out and . . . SCORE . . . it was in there!

I don't know the source . . . it's not on the printed sheet. Sorry, Source, I can't give you credit.

I've typed out the recipe for you below. It was goooooood.

Korean Chicken

1 - 3 lbs. chicken wings
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1/2 c shoyu
6 tbsp sugar
2 tbsp sesame oil
2 chili peppers, seeds removed, crushed
green onions, chopped fine
1/3 c potato starch (may substitute cornstarch or flour)
1/3 c flour
oil for frying

Disjoint chicken wings, discarding tips. Set aside. In a small bowl, combine garlic, shoyu, sugar, sesame oil, chili peppers and green onions. Stir to dissolve sugar, then set aside.

In a small ziplock bag, combine potato starch and flour. Heat oil (about 1/2 inch deep) in skillet. Coat chicken pieces in potato starch/flour. Fry in heated oil until golden brown. As chicken browns, remove from skillet and plunge into sauce. Turn chicken pieces to coat well.

Guri Guri!!

Success!!  It came out so ono! And it was easy to make too.

IMG_7883

I combined 24 ounces (2 cans) of strawberry soda with 12 ounces (1 can) of 7-Up, a can (14 oz) of condensed milk and 1/4 cup of heavy whipping cream. I put everything except the condensed milk in the 'fridge ahead of time so that they would be cold.
IMG_7866

I put half of the mixture in the ice cream maker and let it churn. I covered the puka on top with my Marukai flyer 'cause I wanted it to stay as cold as possible.
IMG_7873

After about 1/2 hour it was ready. Luckily, Leslie has two freezer buckets so I could do the second batch right after the first.
IMG_7876

Whatever we didn't eat right away, I put in a container and threw it in the freezer for later.
IMG_7892

I wondered aloud if I should get me an ice cream maker, and Landon said that it would be too dangerous for us. Unfortunately that's only too true.

Maui - 2006

Here are some of the pictures that I took on Maui 10 years ago.  Back then My Precious camera was a 8.2 MP Canon 20D.

Maui Omiyage

Here's the omiyage I brought back from Maui.

Goat cheese: Top: O Sole Mio (sun-dried tomatoes), Middle: Ole! (jalepeno, artichoke, cilantro, lime juice), Udderly Delicious (plain), Bottom: Brick (aged in wax), Ivory Coast (fresh-cracked black Telligerry peppercorns), Garden Fantasia (fresh garden herbs)
IMG_7801

I got this natto from Ah Fooks' Supermarket in lieu of manju . . . and guess what! My brother said it's the best natto he ever ate in his whole life!! Whoot! Whoot! (or whatever cool thing young people say nowadays). Try googling "hama natto" (浜納豆).  It's seems to be a different variety of natto, supposedly more miso-y and not as sticky as regular natto. Some pictures show it to be very dark and dry looking. So interesting. I'm wondering now if the Chinese black beans is a form of dried natto. Might be, yah?
IMG_7791

I got this from Ah Fook's too. It was the last one. I gave this also to my brother. Don't tell him, but before giving it to him I carefully opened it up and cut a slice off one end to taste. I like Kauai kulolo better.
IMG_7787

This was from Home Maid Bakery. It was good if you thought "brownie" instead of "mochi" while eating it.

Wish I coulda brought back some guri guri.  Guess I gotta learn how to make my own.

Maui 2017 A.G.(After Goats)

After visiting the goat farm, we headed southward toward lunch . . . Bully's Burgers.  I had seen photos and articles online about the burger and wanted to try it.

Maui Time has declared Bully’s Burgers the “Best Burger Ever!” Their all natural beef burgers are served up hot and fresh daily, but you’ve gotta be ready to make the trip to get there. From what I hear it is well worth the adventure…and if you’re in Maui, why not go for a little adventure in pursuit of an amazing burger? You’ll find them on Kanaio, which is past the Ulupakalua Winery.

On the way we made a stop at Ali'i Kula Lavender Farm.

It was here where I understood just what "Upcountry Maui" means. It means being situated on the slopes of Haleakala with its cool air and misty hills. It means fertile soil and beautiful landscape.

Wandering through the sloping fields at this elevation helped me earn my first FitBit Happy Hill badge for climbing the equivalent of 10 floors!
IMG_7664

I noticed some movement in one particular patch of flowers. Do you see him?
IMG_7652

A tiny mouse was scurrying around between the stalks!
IMG_7614

I had read that animals didn't like the taste of lavender, but this guy apparently didn't read that article.
IMG_7630

One particular patch of lavender looked fresher than others so I switched to my macro lens to get a few close-up shots.

Further down the hill near the gift shop was a garden with assorted plants.

By the time we were done at the lavender farm it was way past lunchtime and we were HUNGARY. We jumped into our rental and headed towards Piilani Highway and Bully's Burgers. The GPS told us that it was still about half hour away.

The road was windy, and I started getting carsick. The half hour seemed like two hours. Finally, Ms. GPS told us that we were getting closer . . . and closer . . . and closer . . . and then past . . . Wha???

It was supposedly a roadside burger stand situated in an area that we could easily see. You can see a photo of the stand here. I also stole the picture of the below menu from the website. I never got to take my own photos because apparently THE PLACE CLOSED DOWN.  After discovering this fact from some nice people at a honey stand, we backtracked.

bullys

The Ulupalakua Ranch Store was about 5 minutes back from the honey stand. The guy at the stand said that the burgers at the Ranch Store were just as good as Bully's.

Leslie and I both ordered the beef burger with cheddar cheese.

They were grilled outside.

IMG_7741

I thought that it was just awright.
IMG_7749

After lunch we headed back north to Komoda Bakery in Makawao.
IMG_7769

IMG_7760

Even though most of the shelves were empty, we found just what we came for.
IMG_7756

IMG_7757

These buns were soft and on the sweeter side, kinda like ensamada. We liked um!
IMG_7761

This was also good!
IMG_7762

I was expecting to love the famous Komoda Bakery cream puff, but unfortunately I didn't. It was the vanilla-pudding-like filling that failed to impress me.
IMG_7768

Our next stop was Maui Specialty Chocolates in Kahului. We had hoped to pick up some Chocolate Truffle Mochi.
IMG_7774

But no such luck.
IMG_7776

We decided to skip dinner because we were full from snacking, so our last stop before filling up gas and heading to the airport was Ah Fook's Supermarket where I wanted to finally get some Maui Manju to bring home. But, I had no luck here either. All they had was the same Home Maid Bakery kine that we can find on Oahu. So guess what I bought instead.  Maui Natto!  Almost same thing . . . right?
IMG_7779

That was a fun, goat-filled, lavender, guri-guri day! Thanks Les!
